LEAGUE FOOTBALL
HAMILTON v. CAMBRIDGE. A match between the Hamilton and Cambridge Rugby League reps, was played at Cambridge on Saturday. Tbe weather was perfect, and there was a large number of spectators. Following were the. teams: — Hamilton (black and white).— Jacques; Whalen, llurne, Paterson; Bishop, Nealic; Moyle; Payne, Davis, MeVeagh, Laughlin, Molesworth, Neil.
Cambridge (rod • and white). Shoslrom; Appleby,' Pan, Robinson; Stewart, Tlnickerie; Mclvor; West, Merchant, Cooper, Reynolds, KSly, Campbell. Hamilton won ttic toss, and defended tlie northern goal in the first spell. The Blacks did not seem to got going in Hie first spell, and frequently had to he on the defensive against strong attacks from their opponents. Cambridge scored in the first spell lo Hamilton’s 1 ®!). In the second half of the game the tables were turned, and Hamilton started to build up a score, and although Cambridge still played a good game, and several times went close to scoring, the game ended with Iho scores: Hamilton 13, Cambridge 9.
Tries for Hamilton wore scored by Bishop, Payne, and McVeagh, and Paterson converted one l»y and kicked a penalty goal. For Cambridge tries were scored by Stewart, Kelly, and Reynolds. In each case the attempt at goal failed. On a whole, the game was disappointing. The Hamilton backs who have the reputation of moving the ball about, did not seem to show up in this match. The Cambridge backs gave, repeated exhibitions of brilliant passing. Mr Saunders, of Hamilton, acted as referee.
&GARUAWAHIA v. FRANKTQN. On Saturday afternoon the Frankton representative champions of the Hamilton competition journeyed to Xgaruawaliia to play the elect of the Delta township, which carried off first honours in the Lower Waikato competition. The match therefore really decided which was the champion team in the South Auckland district, Ngaruawahia all through the game played much the bettor football, and tho scores, 11) to 14, in their favour, is a fair index of their superiority over the visiting team. The match, which was played before a good attendance, was the subject of much interest in League circles, and the good exposition of the code witnessed was a happy indication of flic improvement the game is making in these parts.
