COMMERCIAL NEWS.

HAMILTON MARKETS*

GRAIN, SEEDS, PRODUCE, ETC

There is very little change to report in the market except that, as a result probably of the inclement weather, business has fallen off during the last few days. Prices remain as at last week. Grass-seed and fertilisers are still in steady demand, but business in most other lines is inclined to be a little quieter than last week. Fowl wheat is still in good demand and quotations are on a par with late rates. Good samples are rather difficult to obtain, this being due to the large quantities being taken for milling purposes. The demand continues good for oats, which arc selling at 4s 9d for feed and 6s 9d for good Algerian seed. Good quality e*aff is rather scarce, and largo quantities of inferior material "are reaching the market. Blenheim lines are considered about the only reliable ones on the market, although the price for Blenheim —£12 per ton—• is rather high, most, of the business is being done in this line. The quality of the maize being received on the local market is rather mixed, and quotations vary accordingly. Old maize of good quality is fetching 6s 9d per bushel. Fruit and Vegetable

Supplies' of fruit have become a little shorter during the week, and prices are hardening. Especially does this apply to oranges, which are fetching a phenomenal figure. However, a line of Navel oranges are expected today, and this should greatly ease the market for a time. Apples are not in such good supply as last week and good samples of the more popular varieties are selling at very satisfactory prices. Delicious are fetching up to 16s, Stunners up to 10s, and Dougherties up to Bs. Amongst cooking apples Ballarat Seedlings are quoted at 8s 6d, and Lord XVolseleys at Bs. Eating peaks are now right off the markets, and the few cooking pears that are coming to hand are selling very slowly at from 5s to 6s. Lemons are being received in good order and are being moved out at 22s per case. potatoes.—Stocks of Canterbury table potatoes are rather limited at the present time. Small quantities are being received continually and have been about sufficient to meet the demand. Quotations are 14s 6d per cwt. Poultry, Eggs and Butter.

Poultry were penned in good numbers and prices were on a par with late rates. A-line of Black Orpington pullets fetched 6s each; old hens brought from 2s 6d to 3s 3d, and others from 3s 6d to 4s 9d. Good roosters sold at from. 4s 3d to 5s 3d, and others from. -3s 9d to 4s. Ducks realised from 3s 3d.-to 35,.1d.
