HAMILTON LIBRARY.

THE REFERENCE ROOM,

ADDITION OF NEW BOOKS,

Very substantial additions have, during the past few weeks, been made to the books on the shelves of the Hamilton Public Library, something like 300 new volumes having been purchased. Of these about 160 are l'OL’ the Deference Library, where a very sound nucleus h as been established. In the past, of course, the Library Committee has been . sadly hampered by want of funds, but a little more freedom of action is now permitted by the increased borough subsidy, and by the additional acconimodation which has been provided 10 the enlargement of the building. Most of the ordinary subjects are no.v represented by at least a few books, while others are dealt with by quite a number of standard works. The committee is getting the complete Everyman’s Library, which, in itself, contains about 300 volumes, while the latest revised and re-wrill.cn Chambers’ Encyclopaedia is being purchased as it is published. There is also a copy of the newest Webster Dictionary, a big list of quotation reference works, while tiie committee is paying special attention to works on agriculture. Already all the New Zealand publications on this subject liave been procured, while commerce and electrical, mechanical and motor engineering have not been overlooked. The idea of the committee is not to burden the shelves with a lot or nondescript works, but to get the advice of experts as io the best reference books lo procure. The present set is an excellent foundation on which to build, and the library, taking it all round, will, with the additions ol' new furniture now on order, be amongst Hie best equipped provincial ones in Ihe Dominion.
