TRADE WITH EAST.

NEW ZEALAND'S CHANCE. THE DOMINION'S GREATEST DIFFICULTY. MUTTON AND BUTTER. On the important subject of development of trade with the East a "New Zealand Times representative was informed by the Department of Industries and Commerce that an interesting letter had been received from a New Zealand business man who is experienced in the Eastern trade, and has recently taken up his residence in Singapore. The following extracts will probably interest many New Zealand business men who are on the look out to find openings for ttie products of New Zealand industries tn the East: —

Re Proposed New Zealand Trade Commission to Java.—The tallowing suggestions are made : (1) All samples should bo tastefully displayed so that each exhibit shall present a neat appearance. (2) All exhibits should, if possible, be made up to fill 40 cubic feet of space, a shipping ton. (3) Information asto the c.i.f. price of all goods at date displayed should be available; business is unlikely to eventuate on any other basis. Siam is well catered for with beef, but not with mutton or lamb, and fancy canned meats should do well. Hongkong is well supplied with mutton and lamb of fair quality, but fancy meats should find a good market. The greatest difficulty hi placing New Zealand goods on Eastern markets fs lack of direct, shipping with refrigcr ated space, and the high cost of packing anything but bulk shipments. The refrigerated space in ships working the ports of Siarn and Burma is controlled by the Singapore Cold Storage Co., Ltd., who in turn, it is stated, are partly controlled by the Queensland Meat" Packers' Company.

New Zealand butter prices in Singapore are usually about J*d per lb more than Australian butter, and it is staled that New Zealand mutton is often r.neaper brought from London (ban via SMiiii'v. The Slam markets especially arc well supplied with Danish butter.
