WORTHY OF SUPPORT.
-»IIWS OF THE S.P.C.W.C.
APPEAL BY TUB PRESIDENT.
Ills Worship the Mayor (Mr ,T. R. Fow), as president of the Hamilton branch of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, makes the Hollowing appeal to the public:— "On behalf of the Hamilton branch of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, I crave the generous support of the people generally. Its objects may be summarised as follows:
"1. To prosecute in cases of cruelty, seduction, outrage, or excessive violence to women and children. "2. To give advice and aid to women who have been cruelly treated, neglected or deserted. "3. To make provision for children i.i homes when it is found that the parents or guardians arc unfit to have charge of them.
"4. To act as trustees or guardians o r illegitimate children; to receive and expend moneys provided for the care and maintenance of suoh children. "5. To agitate for the improvement of the statute laws, with a view to more effective protection of women and children.
"6. To prevent cruelty to animals bj enforcing existing laws and by exciting and sustaining an intelligent opinion regarding man's duty to the lower animals.
"These objects will surely appeal and win the goodwill of the public, and in order to give effect to them a large membership is desired. The membership fee is fixed at 5s annually, and a donation of £5 constitutes life membership. For some time residents of Hamilton have given financial support to the Auckland Society, and we confidently look to them to give their support to the Society just started in Hamilton. It will bo necessary to appoint two officers, one to act as inspector in each department. At the inaugural meeting splendid offers of assistance came from members of the legal profession, and great interest was shown in the movemet.
"The rules of the Society have now been drafted ready for confirmation, and the committee and officers of the Society appointed. All present at the first meeting are requested to send in their names if willing to enrol as members, and all those who are interested in the activities of the Society are desired to give in their names to the secretary, Mr Seymour, solicitor, Smith's buildings, or the president (the Mayor, Collingwood Street). A special appeal is made for life members, as this undoubted honour also gives a substantial backing to the early operations of the Society."
