DELAY IN RECONSTRUCTION,

PROTESTS BY BUSINESS MEN.

A deputation of business men waited on Mr Lowe, the County chairman, on Saturday night to urge the completion of the Waikawau bridge, which was damaged in the April flood and has not been repaired. They pointed out the serious difficulty and danger of fording the river, holding up mails and communication witn Coromandel, and referred to the unusual length of time in repairing a small bridge that, under ordinary circumstances, could bp done in a month. They urged that the county should insist on the Parker Lamb Timber Company completing it at once, as the damage was caused by the breaking of their booms holding kauri logs. Mr Lowe, in replying, said he could not understand the delay. He hao visited the spot which was 18 miles from Thames, four times, and received a promise from the company that it would push on with the work. He promised that the Council would take immediate action. Information has been received that a local ear owner, in attempting-to ford the stream, became embedded in the mud. As assistance was not available he had leave the car, which the rising tide completely submerged. It is estimated the salt water damaged it to the extent of £2OO.
