A. P. AND H. SOCIETY.

MEETING AT MORRINSYILLE.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS.

At the annual meeting of the Morrinsville A., P. and H. Society, on Friday evening, Mr Geo. Howie presided. There were, jlso present Messrs F. J. Marshall C. McDavitt. P. 6. Philpot, G. Irvine, E. McKenzte, W. C. Gargill, R. G. Saxon, G. Dickinson, and C. H. McKay (secretary). Apologir-.s for absence were rescivea from Messrs C. Cameron and P. McNaughton.

Report and Balance Sheet.

Tine report and balance sheet as under were presented and adopted. The report stated: — The Society has emerged from its fifth year in a quite satisfactory position. The credit balance on the Ist July, 192t2, was £BS Is 8d: on Ist July, 1923, it was £B7 17s 3d. Taking into consideration the difficulties experienced during the year, and the continued financial depression affecting the district, this result must be considered as most satisfactory. During the period under review, the following shows were held: —A. and P Show on 14th March, 1923; a Dog Trial on 21st May, 1923; a Summer Horticultural Show, on 31st November, 11)22; an Autumn Horticultural Show, on 22nd March, 1923. The receipts in certain cases show a decrease on the previous year's returns as shown by "the following figures, those for the preceding year being given in .parenthesis: —Subs. £165 l'2s (£lB5 lis 6d); donations, £137 15s (£lO3 7s 6d); entry fees, £l4O 9s 6d (£175 19s 6d); advts. in schedules, etc., £2B 13s 6d (£l9 13s); ground rents, £23 Is 6d (£l6 2s): gates £B9 2s 6d (£lOl 9s). As in previous years there is a considerable amount outstanding for subscriptions, and if this could bo collected there would he a handsome surplus. The fifth annual At and P. Show was held on Wednesday, March 14. The entries, whilst no>', up to the high stan-' dard set by prcvous years, were very satisfactory, find the ava'iahle accommodation was fully tax-d. The attendance, unfortunately, was considerably below expectations. This was undoubtedly largely due to the fact that the date clashed with the Paeroa races. The Hon. the Prime Minister was present, and officially opened the Show. The local bank managers and their staff? Again very kindly took charge of the gates. The only matter unfavourably commented on by the visiting judges and exhibitors was the cramped nature of the ground and the lack of sufficient accommodation for public and stock. The matter of providing a larger show .ground is one that must be faced by the Society at once. Your committee realises this, and has appointed a sub-committee to bring down a report at this meeting. Dog- trials were held on Wednesday, March 21. It was a most successful meeting, and keen competition was shown in all the classes.

Horticultural Branch. —The Horticulture branch tried a new venture this season in the shape of a summer show in November. Unfortunately after the date was fixed and all arrangements were made it was found that the general election would be held about this date. Nevertheless, the results were very satisfactory, and the committee considered that the venture was justified, and that the Summer Show should become an annual event.' Oh Thursday, March 22, the annual Autumn Horticultural Show was held in the Drill Hall. Here again we were unfortunate in that the Matamata Show was held on the same date, and in the evening the Prime Minister addressed the electors in connection with the Tauranga by-election. The result was that very few attended the Show in the evening, and the door takings were considerably less than expected. The entries, however, were very good both in quality and quantity, and the results were quite satisfactory. When it is considered that in spite of all handicaps the horticultural shows have paid their way, it must be admitted that this branch has justified itself by the year's operations. The balance sheet showed that receipts (including balance brought forwrd from the preceding year) exceeded expenditure by £B2 6s In the A. and P. section, and £7 lis 3d in the dog trials.

The election of officers resulted as follows: —Patron, Mr C. E. Macmillan, M.P.; president, Mr P. McNaughton; vice-president, Mr C. Cameron; general committee, Messrs C. Davitt, G. Howie, 11.
