AMERICAN POLITICS.
GREAT PROBLEMS.
PRESIDENT'S RESPONSIBILITIES.
PRESENT CABINET RETAINED.
Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn. WASHINGTON, August 11. •The new President, Mr Calvin Coolidge, returned to the capital to-day to take over the affairs of State. The now executive is faced with numerous problems which Mr Harding left undecided. These include: — 1. The threatened strike on the anthracite coalfields.
2. The Ruhr and reparation situation. 3. An extra 'Congressional session demanded by the farmers block to deal with the acute agricultural situation. 4. The impending recognition of Mexico.
5. The probable re-alignment of the Cabinet.
6. The policy of the Executive in regard to the Court of International Justice. 7. The formulation of domestic legislative policies. 8. Re-alignment on the prohibition enforcement issue.
On the way Mr Coolidge handles these matters depends his renomination by the Republicans next June when candidates will he chosen for the next Presidential term. Many political leaders contend that the whole success of the new President's administration and the possibility of his re-election depend on his handling of the coal situation. While Mr Harding's body was crossing the country a constant stream of politicians followed Mr Coolidge, endeavouring to learn his views and to inform him of theirs. Prominent among these were the irreconcilables who oppose the United States' participation in the Court of International Justice. The President, however, so far has refused to express himself on this or any other subjects. It is announced from White House that the present Cabinet will be retained.
