MULTIPLICITY OF CANDIDATES.
DE VALERA'S CANDIDATURE
Australian «mi N.Z. c.iM" A«=«n. DUUBLIN. August 12. Already there are 31G candidates for the 153 seats in the Dail. The Government Party has 101, the Republicans 61, the Farmers 07, and Labour 48. In addition there are 42 Independents and seven business men candidates. The final total may be 330.
De Valera will be allowed to participate without let or hindrance. He is to address the electors of Clare on Wednesday. The Republicans have established their headquarters in Suffolk Street, Dublin, the Government not objecting. The election is unique in Irish history, because of the largeness of the register, the operation of proportional representation, and the multiplicity of parties. It is prophesied' that the Government will retain a good working majority. The Farmers' Union hopes to be the second strongest party, and Labour hopes to strengthen its position. Polling will take place on August 27, and the new Dail will meet on September 19.
