HOCKEY TOURING TEAM.
DEFEATED BY NEW SOUTH WALES. FIVE GOALS TO NONE. United Press Association. SYDNEY, August 8. The New Zealand hockey team was defeated by New South Wales on the SjdDey cricket ground by five goals to 0. The local combination proved speedier and cleverer in all departments, especially during the first half, where four goals were registered. The New Zealanders gauged the ground better after the interval, and at times gave a finer exhibition than the local side. Their offensive movements, however, were chiofly confined to inside the field, thus drawing the defence infield, and shutting off the net from the iuvaders. The scorers were: Milner and Nettleton, two each; and Craig. ■ Waits played for the New Zealanders, but was handicapped through his recent injury. CANTERBURY BEATS MANAWATU. PALMERSTON N., Wednesday. The hockey challenge, shield match payed here to-day between Canterbury and Manawatu resulted in the Southern challengers securing the shield by six goals to two. The gam; was fairly even, Willi Canterbury hav • ing the better of the combined passages. A large crowd was delighted at the exhibition of hockey given, and gave botli teams a fine hearing, the winners receiving an ovation on leaving the ground- For Canterbury. Shevriffs, Squire (2), S. Bell (2), and Willy Bell scored, and Kyle and Blundell scored for Manawatu.
