A SALUTARY SENTENCE.
10 YEARS AND A FLOGGING. FOR ASSAULT ON A CHILD. By Telegraph.—Press Association. AUCKLAND, Monday. "I look upon this as one of the worst cases I have ever had to deal with," said his Honor Mr Justice Herdman, in the Supreme Court, when he sentenced James Baldwin, aged 30, to ten years' hard labour and a flogging of ten strokes for a criminal assault on a girl of seven years. Accused expressed his willingness to be sterilised.
His Honour said he had no power to make such an order.
