BRAN AND POLLARD.

A PRONOUNCED SHORTAGE,

By Telegraph. —Special to Times AUCKLAND, Monday.

"It is up to the Government, said an Auckland produce merchant this morning, " to take off the duty on imported bran 'and pollard. Supplies here are very short just now. You see the prolonged wet weather has greatly increased the consumption of bran and pollard this winter. The local mills are quite unable to cope with the present demand. I must say the mills arc treating us very fairly in this matter, because notwithstanding the scarcity, prices have not been put up. It is a great credit lo them that they have not taken advantage of the opportunity which undoubtedly exists, to demand higher prices for both bran and pollard. ' The market in Sydney for these items is £7 per ton, which means a landed cost hero of £9 per ton even if the duty was lifted, but still it would ensure consumers getting supplies, which at the present time they cannot do in New Z.ealand."
