ESCAPE OF PRISONERS.
GUARDS OVERCOME. MOTOR LORRY COMMANDEERED. Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn. PHILADELPHIA, July 14, Six prisoners made a sensational escape from the Eastern Penitentiary. They overcame two guards, climbed the prison wall and slid down a rope to freedom. They then commandeered a motor lorry, frightening the- driver with a revolver, and drove off. Next they abandoned the lorry for a passenger motor car, and later, seized a speedier car, making good their escape, through a thickly populated suburban area and crosisng into another State. Hero they summoned a man from a field where he was working, to his own house, bound and gagged him and stole 200 dollars and three suits of clothes, which they donned, and drove off.
All six wore serving long sentences for burglary and robbery.
