MINISTER OF RAILWAYS.
ERRONEOUS STATEMENT. AN AMUSING INCIDENT. By Telegraph.—Special to Times. WELLINGTON, Friday. An explanation by the Minister of Railways (Hon. J. G. Coates) put the House in a good humour. He referred to a statement in a Liberal organ that morning that he had stated that he had framed a progressive railway policy. When- the Opposition laughed he said he did not mind anyone laughing at him when he said that. Having only had the Railways portfolio for a few days he had -not presumed to hatch a progressive railway policy in that time. The erroneous statement arose out of an unofficial report of a deputation the day before for excursion fares t,o Queenstown. A member of the deputation, the Member for Wakatipu (Mr J. I-lorn) rose in his place and endorsed what the Hon. J. G. Coates said, and regretted the embarrassment he had been caused.
