LEAGUE FOOTBALL.

(By "Verax.")

In spite of the bleak and threatening weather a large crowd attended Hlnemoa Park last Saturday to witness the matoh between Marist Old Boys and Hamilton. The football provided was of a very high standard, and kept the spectators at excitement pitch from the, first' to the final whistle.

The visitors were first to strike form, and 15 minutes after the commencement looked like running up a big score. Hamilton, however, pulled themselves together and finished victors by a substantial margin. Jacques, fullback for Hamilton, played a fair game. He is inclined to be weak when bustled, and is often out of his place. He scored a very creditable try in the concluding stages of the matoh. Solomon, on the right wing, was weak. He Is altogether too slow and inexperienced for rep. football yet. Corlclson, the other winger, did not get many changes. He is a very fast man, but needs feeding. He does better when he has plenty to do\ Soronson played a good game and was prominent in several excellent movements. Stewart and Dufty combined well at five-eighths. The latter player is a bit inclined to be offside when waiting for the ball from the scrum, but otherwise he plays good football, and is a great scoring man. Stewart played a good game and would have done much better but for getting a nasty knock on the head. For a long period in the first session he was quite dazed. Peckham played a good game behind the scrum. He was here, there, and everywhere, and repeatedly saved his side. Payne was the pick of the forwards, and was perhaps the best forward on the ground.. Bond als o played well In this department. He was originally an emergency for the team, but his game on Saturday amply justifies his Inclusion in future rep. teams.

Sherlock played a very safe game as fullback for the visiting team. His only fault is that he runs a little too far at limes. Lunch, at centre', was the best of the three-quarters. He should have fed his wings more, but otherwise his play was good. Thurston and Brisbane both played well in the Marist back division, and Johnson was the pick of the forwards.

Marist backs made a mistake in Irving to get through in solo efforts. They tried the "dummy" repeatedly, but the local men were not to be caught napping.
