ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL.

(By "Lex.")

The following table shows the positions of the clubs in the Upper Waikato League:—

The leading goal scores for all matches up to and including last Saturday, both League and. friendly, are: Hoy. (United), 7; Moon (Wanderers), 7; Johnston (Morrinsville), 5; Haycock (Morrinsville), 3; Louden (Waihou), 2; Marsden (Waihou), 2; Potts (Wanderers), 2; Timms (Morrinsville), 2; Blnnie (United), 2. Answer to Correspondent. "Soocerite." —(i) If the ball touches the referee and goes over the goalline between the goal posts during play, a goal is scored. (2) A goal

cannot be scored direct from a free kick, awarded against the goalkeeper for carrying in the penalty area. (3) The South Auckland Association has already written to Wellington regarding the new rules as to the taking of the penalty kick, and the amendment in relation to ofT-side play. JOTTINGS. Mr L. Dawson, late of New Plymouth, who will referee the Brown Shield match, officiated in one of the New Zealand v. Australia test matches last-.'! season, and is absolutely in the front rank as a referee in New Zealand* I j must congratulate Mr Horace Toombs on the way his boys from the Technical School shaped against the older and heavier b'oys from Huntly thii other week. That the Hamilton boys have considerably improved is self evident, and with more combination, especially between the forward and intermediate links, Technical School will be hard toibeat for their age. \ There are one or two-points in connection with the game that do not appear to be as well known as they might be, even by some of our senior players. One of these is the rule regarding hands. Referees are specially advised that, in their opinion, the bundling of the ball must be intentional to constitute an offence, yet we often see players claiming free and penalty kicks against their Opponents, when it is quite evident that the player was quite an unwilling offender.

Mr R. M. Chadwick, who toured with the N.Z. team in Australia in 1905, and is now the president of the Chamber of Commerce, Napier, will be.present at the Brown Shield match.

It is almost certain that as a curtainraiser to the Auckland v. South Auckland game, Auckland Watersiders v. Auckland Y.M.C.A. will bo seen In action, and it will certainly be something of a record to have three Auckland teams of the Soccer code in Hamilton on the one day.

Country clubs are especially advised I i watch Ihe advertisements which will appear in Ibis paper next week, regarding the delay in the lime of departure of the trains, lo enable their supporters lo view the Brown Shield game.
