LEAGUE FOOTBALL

(By “Verax.”)

The City v. Frankton match, played at Hinemoa Park on Saturday, was more evenly contested than the scores indicate. Frankton, who were victors by the substantial majority of 21 to 3, played their usual fast bustling game, and severely tested the defensive capabilities of the opposition. City have had very hard luck so far this season, particularly in having players on the injured list, and they deserve credit for the plucky way in which they turn out and give battle to the stronger teams. Athletic and United were billed to play a friendly match on Saturday, but as there was not a full' muster of players, jt was decided to abandon the game. It is regrettable that the players do not take enough interest in the game to turn out for a practice. They require combined practice more than anything, and with the representative fixtures drawing near it behoves every player io get in all the training possible. A persistent rumour Is being circulated that Tim Peckham, Athletics’ half-back, and South Auckland rep., is applying for reinstatement to Rugby. Supporters can rest assured, however, that such is not the case. “Verax” has Peckham’s own word to that effect. The senior matches next Saturday are: Athletic v. Frankton, and City v. United. Frankton defeated Athletics by 17 points to 14 in the first round, and a very close and interesting game is expected when the two meet next Saturday.
