HAMILTON FESTIVAL.

—♦ ■ THE COMPETITIONS. VARIED AND ENJOYABLE. THE LATEST AWARDS. Large audiences continue to be attracted to each session—morning, afternoon and evening—of the Hamilton Musical and Elocutionary Society's competitions at the Town Hall, and keen interest is manifested in the performances of the competitors. The programmes are varied, and arc proving very' enjoyable. Yesterday the special feature was the excellence of the character work. Next week the .competitions will be held in the Theatre Royal.

Judge's Advice. The judge of elocution, Mr Culford Bell, in referring to the good work done in the recitation in character class, said .he would like to suggest to students and teachers that pieces in coster dialect should not be chosen. Unless pieces of this type were- very well done, they were 'not likely to win prizes, and it was not a wise policy to give juniors these pieces: Efforts were being made to' improve the speech of the young, and Cockney dialect selections were not likely to help in this direction. He Would Mike to have a definite rule made, so that teachers would have a guide. Dialect pieces should be cut out.

Mr Bell said that, ih making his awards, he put down, on his papers only the faults, as he thought that would be more helpful to the competitors. The judges were kind,' and had no desire other than to help the entrants, and thought this could best be done by pointing out what they lacked. (Applause.) The Awards. .
