THE KING AND THE POPE.
PROPOSED vism PROTESTANT DISAPPROVAL. ABANDONMENT ADVOCATED. Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn. LONDON, April 11. What was described as a great Protestant appeal against the proposed Royal visit to the Pope was made at a packed meeting in the Albert Hall. Baron Gisborough presided. The following resolution was carried :—"That this gijea't dejmonstration of loyal subjects of the Crown regards with serious apprehension and regret the announcement that the King and Queen of England intend visiting the Pope, and respectfully and dutifully submits that as this will be a source of great grief to millions of His Majesty's devoted subjects, the visit should be abandoned. It appeals to the Prime Minister to submit to the King the inadvisabiiity of the visit." A further resolution was: "This meeting calls upon the Government to immediately withdraw the British envoy from the Vatican, seeing that diplomatic relations with the Pope are an infringement of the Constitution and a grave menace to the welfare of this Protestant kingdom."
