“WANTED A SALESMAN”
CHARGES OF FALSE PRTENCES. / ELDERLY MAN SENT TO GAOL. An elderly man, named Henry George Walmsley, described by Chief-Delec-tivc Kemp as an agent, appeared before Mr W. G. Riddell, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court, Wellington, on a charge of obtaining £5 from George S. Taylor, by falsely representing that ho was in need of a salesman and required a deposit of £5. A further charge of obtaining £2 from James Kirk by a similar false pretence was preferred against the accused. Chief-Detective Kemp explained that a short while ago, the accused had established himself in business as an agent. His offices were in Boulcott street, under the title of “The Universal Agencies,” Accused had received in answer to an advertisement, five replies, four of which each contained £5 and one £2. The accused had engaged three of the applicants, but had failed to return the £5 and £2 winch were enclosed in the remaining applications. Walmsley was a married man, with n grown-up family, and lie had previously ben before liie court on charges of theft. Acting-Detectives Tongue and Mu rray were responsible for Hie arrest. On the first, eiiarge, the accused was sentenced to iiiree months’ imprisonment lo be followed by fourteen days’ imprisonment for the second offence.
