SOUTH AFRICAN POLITICS

NATIONALISTS AND LABOURITES. CO-OPERATION DISCUSSED., GENERAL lIERTZOG’S ADMISSIONS. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received September 4, 9.35 a.m. CAPETOWN, September 2. Interviewed at Bloemfontein in regard to the reported understanding between the Labour and Nationalist Parties, General Hertzog admitted that he had discussed co-operation with Mr Cresswell at the next elections, with the object of turning out the Government, but he denied that any concessions were made as to giving up the independence programme. He denied that the Nationalists had ever declared that secession was one of their principles. They insisted on the independence of the Union, but not necessarily as a republic. They also recognised that no such question could be decided without a referendum.
