FIRE ON A SCHOONER
ABANDONED AT THE ISLANDS. CREW REACH NEWCASTLE. (United Press Association.) SYDNEY, September 2. The crew of the schooner John A. Campbell have arrived at Newcastle. Captain Ferem explained that smoke was noticed emerging from the afterhatch about noon on August 1, when the loading of copra was almost complete. The crew and a handful of Tarawa settlers were unable to cope with the flames, and the vessel was abandoned at the approach of midnight. The resident -Commissioner found that the Arc was caused accidentally. Captain Ferem says it is generally believed that it was due to spontaneous combustion.
