WAR IN NEAR EAST

ADVANCE OF THE TURKS. GREEK COUNCIL OF WAR. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received September 3, 5.5 p.m. LONDON, September 1. News from Greek sources indicates that the Turks have advanced 75 miles to the west of Aflum Karahissar, and that a Greek Council of War at which King Constantine will preside will shortly examine the military and political situation. There is some speculation .whether the Greek Government contemplates the evacuation of Smyrna. A message from Athens states that the Greek Ministers for War and the Interior have returned from the battle front. Without concealing the gravity of the fighting, they expressed confidence in the ultimate result. They declared that the retreat from Aflum Karahissar was most orderly, and that the losses of the Turks were much heavier than those of the Greeks.
