The death is announced from London of the Duchess of Albany. A London cable announces the death of Surgeon-Rear Admiral Sir George Collingwood. Mr F. W. Diclcinson, chief editor of Reuters, Limited, died in London on Saturday. Mr R. F. Bollard, M.P. for Raglan, spent the week-end in Hamilton. He Will return to Wellington to-night. Mr Henry Lawson, the Australian poet, died suddenly at Sydney on Sunday. A Christchurch telegram reports the death of Archdeacon Stocker, aged 82, formerly of Invercargill. Messrs J. P- Bailey and Campbell Johnstone have been appointed members of the Raglan Licensing Committee. Mr J. Miller, the newly-appointed derk-in-charge of the local courthouse, arrived in Hamilton yesterday, and will take up his duties to-morrow. Mr J. A. Young, M.P. for Waikato, arrived from Wellington by the Main Trunk express yesterday morning. He will return South by to-night s express. Dr. A. S. Brewis and his three daughters, who have been on a trip to the Old Country, and returned to New Zealand by the Niagara on her last trip, arrived in Hamilton to-day. The death is announced at Milton of Mr Donald Reid, solicitor. Deceased was a former Mayor of Milton and member of Parliament for Bruce. Mr Gordons. Reid, architect, of Hamilton, Is his son.

The death is announced from Wellington of Mr V. G. Day, who was for a fcumber of years S.M. in various towns and was latterly president of the Assessment Court. Deceased was years of age, and came to New 'Zealand in 1879. N a Sydney message states, that it is believed in Assembly circles that Sir George Fuller, the present State Premier, will become the New South IWales Agent-General in London at the end of the session in November, and that he will probably be succeeded by Mr C- W. Oakes, who now holds the portfolio of Chief Secretary. . A presentation was made to Mr T. Harle Giles on Saturday, by the office staff of the Labour Department, of a lease of pipes and a tobacco pouch, Suitably inscribed. Mr G. H. Lightloot, offlcer-in-charge, in making the presentation, said all officers of the Department greatly regretted Mr Giles’ retirement, and they all held him in high respect and esteem. In returning thanks, Mr Giles said it was a Source of great gratification to him to realise how many friends he had gainled during his long period of service as feonciliation commissioner.

A very old resident of Auckland, Mr James Job Holland, died on Thursday fit his residence, No. 6, City Road, at the age of 81 years. In 1886 Mr Holland was elected to represent the East Ward in the Auckland City Counted, and seven ye'ars later was chosen Mayor, which office he filled for three years. He was also a member of the Auckland Harbour Board, the Hospital end Charitable Aid Board, Auckland College and Grammar School Board of .Governors, and the Auckland University College Council. In 1896 he was elected a member of Parliament for .the city in which he so long resided. The death took place at New Plymouth on Sunday last of- Mr James Macfle, of Oaonui, at the age of 81 years. He was a native of G otland, and during his early life followed a seafaring occupation, being skipper of various coastal boats plying round Scotland. He took the keenest interest in yachting, and was regarded as one of the best yachtsmen in Scotland. So great was his knowledge in this direction that he was chosen by gir Thomas Lipton to judge an important sailing contest. The late Mr Macfle Went to the Opunake district 'fibout 40 years ago, being one of the original leaseholders under the West .Coast Settlement Reserves Act. He ;was also one of the original shareholders of the Oaonui Dairy Company, .find in his earlier days associated himself in a quiet and unostentatious way [with most moves for the advancement jof the district. He was at one time chairman of the Opunake Wharf Company, and an acknowledged authority pn marine matters. He is survived by h grown-up family, consisting of Mrs iJames Young (Oaonui), R. Macfle |(Hamilton), and Messrs James, Andy, find John Macfle (Oaonui).
