CANADIAN NAVY

RETRENCHMENT PROPOSALS. \

MEETING BITTER OPPOSITION.

(Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received May 20, 12.10 p.m. OTTAWA, May 19. Despite Lord Lee’s recent London speech, in which lie complained that the Dominions were not fulfilling their naval obligations, the Canadian Government lias decided to cut down the; navy.

Two years ago the Admiralty gave’ the Dominion the cruiser Aurora, the destroyers Patriot and Patrician, and two submarines. The Minister for Defence, Mr Graham, lias announced that the Aurora and the submarines will be laid up, and the only defence maintained will be one destroyer and two armed trawlers, each in the Atlantic and Pacific. All Imperial officers will return to England, and Canada is creating a naval volunteer force.

This policy is now before Parliament, and is meeting the most bitter opposition.
