THE BOTTOMLEY CHARGES
TRIAL OPENED
FOR FRADULENT CONVERSION £200,000 INVOLVED. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) LONDON, May 18. The trial of Horatio ■ BotLomley, M.P., on charges of fradulcntly converting large sums subscribed to the Victory Bond Club, of which he was the founder and president, opened at the Old Bailey to-day. Th e jury includes two women. The Judge allowed the prisoner to sit at the solicitors’ table in order to be in touch with experts who are assisting in the defence.
Bottomley pleaded: “Decidedly not guilty.” Mr Travers Humphreys, the leading -Counsel for the Public Prosecutor, detailed 24 counts of alleged frauds, aggregating over £200,000. He said that Bottomley made up his mind to steal £IOO,OOO belonging to the Victory Bond Club, and added: “I say that advisedly." Bottomley, unperturbed, continued taking notes.
