The total death roil in the fire at 'the Hospital of the Holy Ghost has not yet been ascertained. Thc / hospital was one of the most famous and largest charities in the world, and dates from the time of Innocent 111. (1498-1216). The library and museum were the most valuable portion of the building. The disaster was due to a short circuit that started a fire in the laundry, the ancient wopden floor and ceiling of which was soon burning furiously. The 800 patients became panic-stricken when the floor of ,the room occupied by chronic patients fell in. Dense smoke filled the corridors. Doctors and nurses did their best, but were able to do little in the darkness. Most of the victims were between 50 and 70 years of age. The rest of the 800 patients were carried into the courtyard and lay on improvised beds until the fire was extinguished.
