MATAMATA COUNTY

ENGINEER'S REPORT, Tile engineer, Mr F. Shannon, submitted the following report at the monthly meeting of the Matamata Couuly Council on Wednesday:— In the Matamata riding Thomson has completed the Farmers' Road. Ue has prepared the Matamata to Taurauga road for metalling, carried out grader work on the Hot Springs road, also on the road. Tlie trucks have been engag/d in cai ting gravel to the Mafaitiala-Tirau road, and are now engaged iiflMrling gravel from Waharoa to the Wardvillo road, lie will probably finish there to-day. Surface work and repairs have been carried out by Hutcheson, Townly, and Kinnear. In the Peria riding O'Neill has carried out surface work and repairs, and Thomson is now engaged with the county team grading the Station road. Timber was ordered, and is now ready for temporary repairs to the Puketutu bridge. A new bridge will have to be erected here as soon as the drainage works on the Wailoa stream reach this locality. In the Tapapa riding, surface work has been attended 10. In company with Councilor Stopford I met Black, and we arranged terms for a deviation on ttie Kangalanuku road, which will reduce the grade to one in twenty. An agreement .was prepared, but has not been signed. In the Tirau riding surface work and repairs have been carried out. Jn company with the chairman I inspected tlie principal roads In the riding. Grader work and repairs are recommended, the trucks to be engaged to cart metal from the Cambridge road to repair the Hinuera Valley road. In the Taotaoroa riding Land has carried out surface work and repairs. Melxaugh ton's quarry has not turned out a success. Arrangements were made with Mr Bruce to prospect his creek, and property. Good stone lias been opened up; about 1700 cubic >ards in sight, but not sufficient to complete tlie proposals in hand. In the Maungatautari riding surface work and repairs have been attended to. In the Okoroirc riding surface work and repairs have been carried out. The grader worked by the Cletrao is doing satisfactory work. Estimates have been prepared and tlie road measured from Okoroirc railway station to the Waiomou school. Proposals in" the form of a loan to metal it will be placed before the ratepayers for consideration. This being a boundary road includes part of the Tapapa riding. In the Putaruru riding surface work has been attended to, and repairs lo culverts effected. The preparation of estimates for metalling schemes is well in hand, and will be ready for next meeting. In the Tokoroa riding Ash worth is engaged in grader work on the Lichfield road. During this bad weather a number of slips occurred on Hie road to Bartholomew's mill. These have been removed and repairs effected. The report was adopted. Or. Stopford spoke of the Rangata--nulcu road, and expressed the opinion thai this work was most essential, tn reply to Mr Slopford, the engineer mentioned that, he was preparing the plans for tlie deviation.
