SOLDIERS' MEMORIAL

.— v UNVEILED AT PATERANGI. * I An impressive ceremony took place at Paterangi on Wednesday afternoon, when a memorial to soldiers who had made the supremo saerilico in the great war was unveiled by Captain King, M.C. Mr P. W. Maddock represented the Waikato Returned Soldiers' Association, and among those present were Vcn. Archdeacon Gowie and Hovs. Niblock and D. N. McKenzie. Despite the rough .weather there was a large attendance of the general public and school children. Apologies for unavoidable non-attendance were received from Colonel Allen and Mr J. A. Young, M.P. Captain King, in unveiling the memorial, paid a glowing tribute to the. men who had laid down their lives for the sake of humanity. He said that many men brought back Victoria and Military Crosses, but the memorial they were unveiling that afternoon represented the finest cross of all—the little white cross of the battle-Held, with all that it typified. Revs. Niblock and McKenzie also referred to the great work done by the soldiers, and the lasting memorial they had left in the hearts of their fellow-men. Several appropriate hymns were then sung, and prayers offered. A laurel wreath from the Waikato Returned Soldiers' Association was placed on the monument by Mr P. \V. Maddock. A detachment of Mounted Rifles, under Captain Pearce and Lieutenant Collins, formed a liring parly. At the close of the ceremony the Last Post was sounded. The cenotaph is a handsome piece of work in Australian granite, with the names of eight men who had been killed at the war, followed by the inscription, "Greater love hath no man than this that a man lay down his life for his friends."
