A BREEZY INTERLUDE

COUNCIL MEETING ENLIVENED. DISCUSSION OF .YCCOiTNTS. At the' meeting 1 if the HagUin County Council ;it Ngaruawahia on Wednesday a somewhat, spirited discussion took place over the payment of several miner accounts. The clerk, Mr Marsland, replied that he himself had told the girl she would be paid full wages, and that if the Council did not approve the matter would have to be remedied. v Talk then drifted to the paysheets of some of the lorry drivers. The chairman did not see the reason why these men should he paid 18s a day on top of being allowed "fancy" hotel expenses when they were obliged to leave their homes to work further afield. Surely they could take tents with them, or at least the Council could not be expected to pay more than the price of their beds. The engineer, Mr King, then remarked Dial tin' two hum) in question .were cheap al the wage of 18s a day. Cr. Taylor backed up the engineer in this. It was better, he said, to pay good men 18s a day than pay inferior ones 10s a day. Cr. Coburn here broke in by saying that there had been 100 much criticising al the meeting of the work of the ; officials.
