DISTRESS IN ENGLAND
CORNISH TIN WINERS' PLIGHT. 12,000 UNEMPLOYED. UNSATISFACTORY PROPOSAL. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) —- 1 LONDON, November 9. The distress and destitution among the Cornish miners, due to the closure of all the tin mines, owing to the prohibitive price of coal, was discussed in the House of Commons on Tuesday. Sir A. Moud (Commissioner of Works'' declared that if the mines continue closed, the Government will have to consider a scheme lo transfer the miners and their dependents lo other parts of the country, where suitable employment is The proposal is regarded as unsatisfactory in Cornwall, where it is pointed out that, tin miners arc. unable to find work as coat miners—firstly, because it is a different class of work, and, secondly, because 180,000 colliers are already unemployed. . About 12.000 are affected in Cornwall, and have been unemployed in some cases for more than a year. The least period of unemployment has been nine months. It is estimated that 78 per cent of Ihe Cornish ratepayers arc unemployed.
