MONTHLY MEETING. Ut the monthly meeting of the MataKft County Council Mr J. W. Andern presided. There were present 1 essrs B. C. Banks, J. E. West, 11. Rol- - tt R. A. Bent, 11. Judd, J. P. Keeley, j A. Stopford, W. H. Allen, F, Shannon mgincer) and 11. Lewis (clerk). Correspondence. lln respect to the £12.000 "plant and machinery loan," the Bank of New Zeamd advised that, the Pubtio Trustee ad informed them that the payment of 6000 could not yet be made and that te date of payment is uncertain. The iank having allowed the Council to raw on it against this prospective 6000. asked the Council to endeavour o collect all rates so I hat the account nav be reduced to the overdraft limit. The clerk reported that about £3OOO tad been received in rates. In connecion with this loan the Public Trustee. orwarded 12 debentures of £IOOO each. fequestlng same to be signed, sealed, ind returned. . The Public Works Department advisU 'having forwarded £1220 for credit in respect to work done, as follows: — Kaimai road £633, Ngatiri to Oknhirikt £B7, Waharoa io Tauranga-o-Moam £SOO. R. J. H. Latimer's Estate. The Public Trust Office, Hamilton, advised that this matter will be cleared up as soon as the Public Trustee has been appointed committee of the patient's estate and the necessary order obtained. Waiheu-Ohinemuri Rivers Commission. Messrs Gilchrist and Son, solicitors, iTe Aroha, advised that Mr A- J. Baker, [district public works engineer, submitted a patent scheme to provide for interest, sinking fund and maintenance ,upon estimated works £600,000. He assessed Matamata at £1025 per annum, ' Piako £3824, and Te Aroha £1520. "This is an outrage," concluded the ■ letter The writer suggested that the Minister of Public Works be wired voicing the Council's protest.—l he chairman reported that a wire to that effect had been transmitted to the Minister. He (the chairman) considerel that it was a one-sided commission. — The Councillors unanimously agreed. Auctioneers' Licenses. Mr W. 11. Hume, manager Farmers' Co-operative Auctioneering Co., explain- ■ ed the nosition re licenses. "In 1916, when legislation was brought in enabling local bodies to grant auctioneer's licenses, we arranged to take out our licenses'with each local body in rotation. As there, ore something like 20 local bodies and six licenses to divide up amongst ihis number, it means that each local body will get a license about 'once in four years. This, we considered, was Hie only fair way .'that the 'licenses could be distributed. We took . out one license in your county in 1_917, and your turn comes again next year. Whilst quite realising that your Council are anxious to get all the revenue thev can. we certainly consider that a nominal fee is all that should be required Cr. Banks moved that the registration fee be £1 Is, and that the clerk write to the Farmers' Auctioneering Co. pointing out that the Council under the above, circumstances expect them to take licenses out with the Council every three or four years-—Carried. Rotumod Soldiers' Hardships. A returned soldier at Okauia requested remission of his rates on section 5a Block XY, Wairere S.D., on the grounds of hardship.—The clerk reported the rates amounted to £2O 16s.— Left to Cr. Stopford to report. General. The Auckland Automobile Association returned roads map, requesting that it be made up-to-date for the purpose of "getting it out" for the motorists' benefit for the coming season. —Left to engineer. The Auckland Education Board sent a-circular letter showing various proposals approved by that body. They suggested as a suitable resolution on "That the Government be urged to make immediate provision for the establishing of a farm school or college at Ruakura Government Farm of Instruction on the lines outlined in the report on agricultural education as submitted by the Auckland Education Board. —It.was agreed to support th.: resolution. Advice was received intimating that the Internal Affairs Department intended inserting- in the "washing-up" Bill a clause validating the Council's action In dividing sorrfe of the ridings. The chairman reported that it was proposed to reduce the width of a Waharoa road so as to give the school larger grounds, and recommended that for' future guidance legal opinion he sought as to the proper course to take. —Carried. Putaruru Roads. Referring to Hie deputation at last meeting requesting the Council to assist in road improvements in Putaiwu, Mr G. E. Martin, secretary Putaruru District Development Board, wrote that it was unanimously decided that x riding loan embracing the present Putaruru riding would be preferable to a small loan embracing a small special area for each road- The following is a list of roads for metalling for which the riding loan is desired: PutaruruLichfield road to Leslie's corner, Puta-ruru-Ovcrdale road to Mr H. A. Boyd's farm, Putaruru-Waolu road to its junction with the Pukealua road a few chains beyond the Waotu post office, the Pularuru-Puketurua road, the Lichfield alternative road to Mr .f. Dowd's corner to its junction whh the Waotu north road (Farrell's or Dukeson's roads). It was also requested that the Council have the work of clearing the Putaruru district of straying stock competed.—Left to the engineer to supply estimates. Cr. Stopford commended to the councillors thai each riding member should see their ratepayers with a view of ascertaining what metalling they considered was necessary m their districts. Okoroire, Te Poi and Putaruru have requested the Council to act for them, and it was their duly, as councillors, to move in that direction. They suggested that water he pumped up from a spring near the gravel-pit, suggesting that a rating area be struck and that the Railway Department bo approached and asked if they could conn- into the scheme.—Left to riding member and engineer to report. Okoroire Memorial Hall. Mr R. •'.. Lewis, Okoroire, acting upon instructions from the Okoroire settlers, Informed the Council that they had purchased Corry's cheese factory, and : t was their intention to creel a memorial hall. They trusted that the Council would grant thorn the same consideration as' they had done to the Tirau, Matamata and Te Poi halls, namely, a p-ant of £loo.—The clerk to report. Ranger's Report. The ransrer. Mr E. W. Jordan, rrporled that he bad visited the various districts and the following have been impounded: Nine head of cattle from Karapiro to Cambridge: five steers

from Okoroire, three cows from Putamru, seven horses and one foal from Waharoa, two horses from Putaruru, seven yearling heifers from Hinuera. All these were taken to Matamata. Licenses have been collected from hawkers and for cream carting. Finance. Accounts amounting to £B2O i4s 8d were passed for payment.
