BAND QUEEN - S BIG EFFORT

A bazaar and carnival in aid of the Band Queen was opened yesterday, in the Wint.fr Show Buildings, Ward S tree I, \>\ His Worship the Mayor, Mr .1. It. Fow. . The Mayor, in declaring the bazaar open, reminded the public that while the material was in the Hamilton Band it, had always been handicapped by inferior instruments. Now that a new set had been purchased Ihe Band, as evidenced by its success at the recent Thames contest, was in a position to render a line account of itself and act as a. great advertisement for the fair town of Hamilton. The instruments, continued Mr Fow, had been purchased al a. big cost, and the object of the Hand Queen's executive was to wipe off the amount owing. It was the public's duty |o show their appreciation of Ihe Band's efforts to back up the hard-working committee by attending Ihe bazaar and spending freely, thus helping to pay for those instruments which had helped in such large part 1.0 obtain the big advertisement for Hamillon. II might he urged, said Mr Fow, in conclusion, that times were hard, but if people were Lo wait until all things were favourable, nothing would ever be done —the greatest successes were obtained in the face of difficulty.

During the evening the. Hamilton Municipal Hand enlivened proceedings with numerous items, including •'Emperor" march, "Let the Best of the World Go By." and "The Rosary."

An elocutionary competition for children under t i years of age will be held to-night, post, entries being received by Mr W. .!. li. Reynolds. The band will also render several selections, including excerpts from Gilbert and Sullivan's opera.

Good business was done at the various stalls. "Ye Grand Okie English Faire" have arranged an attractive programme far this afternoon and evening. Six basket ball teams will play matches, commencing at 2.30 and elocutionary compel'tions will be held this evening at 7.::0. Keen !n!er<\sl is being'taken in the boys' boxing competition?, which will take place to-morrow (Friday) evening.
