RUSSIAN GUNBOAT'S ACTION.
JAPAN'S PROMPT MEASURES
(Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) TOKIO, October 10. The Russian gungoat Batavia stopped the British steamer Gladys Doeller, off Muroran, Japan, as the steamer. was departing, and demanded the surrender of TOO tons of provisions aboard consigned to the Chita forces, Kamschatka. The Gladys Doeller fled to the Muroran harbour, the gunboat following and firing, but failing to hit her. The Japanese, dispatched two gunboats to hold the Russians and investigate the affair. The British Consul at Hakodate has reported the matter to the Embassy in Tokio, which is investigating.
