CRICKET IN ENGLAND
ARMSTRONG'S CRITICISM
REPUDIATION BY LORD HARRIS
(Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received October 11, 8.5 p.m. LONDON, October 10.
Lord Harris, speaking at a dinner commemorating' the Middlesex championship, repudiated Armstrong's criticism of the English professionals. There is no difference between an amateur and a professional, except that the latter has been compelled to make cricket a profession and the former had not. Armstrong's distinction was erroneous and attributable to profound conceited ignorance. He had bad certain business relations with Armstrong, from whom he understood there was a great deal of betting on English cricket, which affected Ihc game. A leading betting club denied this statement. That fact showed that, what Armstrong knew about English cricket was worth nothing.
