THE ONGAROTO MURDER
EXECUTION OF TE KAHU. NO REPRIEVE POSSIBLE. QUESTION IN PARLIAMENT. (By Telegraph.—Press Association). WELLINGTON, Friday. With regard lo the execution of the Ongaroto murderer, Hakaraia To Kahu, ‘which is to take place on Monday noxl, Mr 11, E. Holland (Bullcr) asked the Prime Minister to-day whether Hie Cabinet's decision was absolutely fma., and whether it would he possible to review the decision with a view to having the sentence commuted lo one of imprisonment for life or a term of years. Mr Holland said there had been three trials, and the evidence was wholly circumstantial. He submitted the Prime Minister knew executions did not have a beneficial effect on the community.
Mr Massey replied: “The answer 1 have lo give the member is that the Cabinet has considered certain petitions that came along asking for the reprieve of the condemned man, and after full and mature consideration I can say that, seeing (hat I happened to be present, the Cabinet decided that the law must take its course."
