THAMES BAND CONTEST

HAMILTON WINS THE TEST. MARGIN OF FIVE POINTS. By Telegraph.—Special to Times. THAMES, Saturday. At the band contest last night the test competition was taken. Eight bands competed, and Hamilton proved the winner with a margin of live points over the Glh Hauraki, whicli was placed second. The test piece was “The Valkyrie” (Wagner), and the points were:— Hamilton 140 Gth Hauraki 135 Ist Auckland Infantry 129 New Plymouth 127 Danneyirke 125 Wliukatane 124 Auckland Watersiders 121 To Aroha 120 Hamilton gave a magnificent performance, full of dramatic force. The crescendos and dirninuedos were very fine, and the solo work was excellent. The final was very brilliant. The band, well together, worked up to a mighty ending, the solo horn and soprano being particularly noticeable. Hauraki were inclined to be robust, hut gave a bright interpretation. The solo cornet was masterly. Auckland Infantry gave a fine dramatic rendition, the finale being very line. The Judge said the test was most difficult and trying, and the performance was surprisingly good. In the baritone solo, own selection, M. McKenzie (Hamilton) was first, R. Sinclair (Auckland) second, and P. Williams (Auckland Battalion) third. The tenor trombone resulted; — J. j Cummings (Hamilton), 89 points, 1; E. Feek (New Plymouth), 87, 2; and H. Redwood (Te ArohaT, BG, 3. B B Flat, Bass. —W. Crosby (Auckland Regimental), 9G, 1; D. Oren (New Plymouth), 89, 2; R. (Woollains (Whakalane), BG. 3. E Flat Bass.—-G. Munro (Auckland), 99, and L.
