COMPULSORY CUTTING UP.
STATE TO ASSIST WITH HOUSES
(United Press Association.) Received October 6, 8.40 a.m. SYDNEY, October 6. The pressing question of closer settlement is being approached from a new angle. A deputation representing the Graziers' Association laid before Mr Dooley a scheme for making it obli- •• gatory on the land holders whose property exceeds £21,000 in value" U> "' voluntarily dispose of the surplus, cutting it up into living areas and preparing these for occupation, the Go- , vernment to advance £SOO for preparation and £3OO upon occupation, for the erection of a house for each settler. It was urged that the scheme should . be made supplementary to the existing schemes. The claimed that they were "not antagonistic _to closer settlement, and they recognisbil the absolute necessity Cor providing- . / land for settlement. They further urged the scheme would provide for'i',,-, quicker and better class of settlement at much less expense than the present: systems. „_
Mr Dooley, who was favourably impressed, promised to give the proposal his sympathetic consideration.
