WIRELESS WONDER

■■ ♦ WRITING 3000 MILES AWAY. A man seated at his desk in London or Paris can now sign a cheque in New York by wireless. This is made possible by an invention of M. Belin, a French scientist, whose achievements arc described in the Matin. . His' initial successes were obtained over a distance of a few hundred kilometres. Then, with the co-operation of the French Wireless Service Department and the management of the Matin, experiments were carried out between the wireless station nt Lafayette, near Bordeaux, and Paris. It was a complete success. A series of "Belingogrammes," comprising ptiotocrophs. geometrical figures, and handwritten' texts, were transmitted by wireless direct to Paris. Successful Trial.

The next step was to exponent over a distance of .1000 miles. Two engineers were despatched to New York. The American authorities were sceptical, and placed obstacle after obstacle in the way. until after a delay of several weeks the American delegates of the Inter-Allied Wireless Commission cabled instructions to the New York Wireless Telegraphy Service to facilitate the trials. The' test was successful. A message from the office of the New YorkTimes was received in facsimile at the office of the Matin a few minutes after it had been written. "The prospect opened up by this new triumph of French mentality." says the Matin, "is limitless. Not only the transmission of judicial documents, of manuscripts, of signatures, of drawings and works of art will henceforth be independent of lime and space, not alone can diplomatic signatures of the most epochmaking character be placed by wireless at the bottom of treaties and conventions, but the authenticity even of the messages acquires fresh guarantees from their autographic transmission."
