PRICE OF SUGAR

REPORTED NEW CONTRACT. REDUCTION EXPECTED. 'Bv TeleKiaph.—Press Association). NEW PLYMOUTH, Tuesday. It is understood that the Government has entered into a new contract with the Colonial Sugar Company, and as a result a reduction by £l3 a ton will be made as from November 1. The present "price of sugar at the works in Auckland is £47, and the new price will be £34. It seems doubtful whether the public will receive the full benefit of this marked reduction, as it is rumoured the Government will take a part of it in the form of a new duty. The new price will mean a reduction in the retail price of about 13d per lb, but it is expected that Jd per lb will go in duty, so that the actual fall in the price of sugar on November 1 will be barely Jd per lb. AN UNCONFIRMED REPORT, STATEMENT THIS V WEEK. WELLINGTON, Tuesday. "I cannot confirm that report," said Hon. E. P. Lee, president of the Board of Trade, when a telegram from New Plymouth regarding sugar prices being lowered next month, was referred to him.

The Minister added that he would probably make a statement on the sugar position in Parliament during next week.
