STIMULATING SETTLEMENT
CARRUTHERS’ MILLION SCHEME. (United Press Association.) , Received July 29, 5.5 p.m. SYDNEY, July 29. Sir Joseph Carruthers, amplifying his scheme for settling a million men on a million farms, and the creation of a £30,000,000 fund for the purpose, says there is sufficient idle land available to provide an average of 1740 acres for one million new settlers. He suggests asking Britain to construct railways to open up the country in return for land concessions. He added that it is understood the British Government has sympathetically received a similar proposal from the Federal Government.
