NIPAH PALM JUICE
♦ The juice of the nipah palm contains 12 per cent, of sugar. Experiments have shown that the process of extraction can be carried on with every prospect of commercial success, as the yield amounts to 40001 b to the arte. In British North Borneo there are about 300,000 acres covered with .nipah palm. In Manila they have also obtained alcohol from it. This alcohol conluiins 25 per cent of uelhyl alcohol, and is a favourite beverage in the Philippines. In 1913 there were 75 distilleries, with modem equipment, producing 21 million gallons, of which 9 per cent was drunk in diluted form, and the rest used for burning purI i.scs.
