IMPERIAL CONFERENCE
LINKING UP THE EMPIRE. COMMITTEE’S REPORT. SUBMITTED TO SPECIAL MEETING. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) Received July 28, 12.10 p.m. LONDON, July 27. A special meeting of the Conference will consider the report on airships. The Australian Press learns that the Daily Chronicle’s summary of the Aviation Committee’s report is misleading. It is believed the report does not make any recommendations whatever, but merely sets out the costs’of commissioning and operating the existing fleet of airships for purposes of Imperial communications between England, India, Africa, Australia and New Zealand, as compared with alternate services by aeroplanes. The committee dealt with various schemes, involving Governmental expenditure by Britain and the Dominions, also Mr Asliboll’s and other civil proposals, but did not commit themselves to any scheme. It is understood that the immediate result will be to obviate the scrapping of the Imperial Airship Department, which the British Government contemplated doing in the middle of August, leaving the Imperial and Dominion Governments an opportunity of considering the committee’s report cither during or subsequent to the conference. Tile conference will resume to-mor-row, and is expected to end on Friday.
