GERMAN MISSIONARIES
PERMISSION TO RETURN* SUBJECT TO SUPERVISION. (Reuter's Telegrams.) Received July 27, 8.50 p.m. LONDON, July 26. The secretary of the World Alliance for Promoting International Friendship Throughout the Churches, has written to the Colonial, Foreign and Indian Offices, and suggested that German missionaries should be allowed lo resume their work in certain British territories. Mr W. Churchill has replied that the war- showed that certain foreign societies and individuals were unable to prevent national instincts influencing their conduct to a degree incompatible with their proper functions, and in a manner prejudical to the security of territories in which they were working, nevertheless, applications from individual missionaries of unimpeachable antecedents would be considered, provided they wore under the control of British, Allied, or Associated subjects,, and vouched for by a responsible British ecclesiastical authority. The circumstances in the mandated and adjoining territories, however, were exceptional, requiring a degree of supervision which would not be necessary elsewhere.
