MATERNITY MORTALITY* (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. The prominence given to the supposed excessive maternal mortality rale in this Dominion in comparison with other countries was given lengthy consideration at the meeting of the Board of Health yesterday. Hon. C. J. Parr, Minister of Health, presided, and in introducing the subject, referred to a reproach which appeared in a publication issued by the United States Labour Bureau, quoting New Zealand as having the second highest maternity mortality rale in the world. After discussing the matter fully the Board agreed that a sub-committee consisting of the Minister, Sir Donald McGavin, and Dr. Elliott, review all the material placed before Ihe Board, and report lo the next meeting.' It also suggested, in view of the fact that the Wellington branch of the Medical Association had given the matter attention, that the committee might invite its opinion. WRECKAGE FOUND. NEW PLYMOUTH, Thursday. Wreckage has- Been washed on the bench near New Plymouth. A large piece of decking has been found, which appears to have come from the starboard boat of a vessel of fair size. The piece measures doft. by 15ft., and is fixed to a number of lOin. by lOin. beams. Ollier beams and deck planking were scattered along Hie beach within about 100 yards of where the large wreckage was found. The wood is Oregon, and the planking is fixed to Hie )>eums by galvanised iron spikes nine inches long and half an inch square No marks are visible on any of the material found Hint would give an indication as to its identity. Those who have examined the wreckage estimate that it has not been in Lite water longer than six or seven weeks.
