COALMINERS’ DEMANDS
REPLY OF THE OWNERS. AWAITING THE NEXT MOVE. (By Telegraph.—Special to Times.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. At the moment there is no sign of Hie coal mine dispute taking a more favourable turn. The Owners’ Association is emphasising Us refusal lo consider Hie men’s demands for the discontinuance of tlie contract system, the institution of the six-hour day and the five-day week, the abolition of the afternoon shifts and the payment for holidays and lost time by insisting that these demands must be withdrawn before it will join in a conference. More than this Hie owners have let it be known quite clearly that they will not tolerate a resumption of the “go slow” policy if. that should be the men’s reply to their refusal. Just what their next step would be, if, is impossible to say, but it is significant that stocks of coal are being very carefully conserved by the State and municip? 1 authorities.
