THE PRICE OF KAPOK.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —in yesterday’s issue of your paper I sec you insert a paragraph that kapok in Ashburton has fallen to 7Ad per lb, making a difference on a mattress of os. This rnu»t be a very gross error. The price of a mattress, so far as kapok influences the prices, depends on its size. A double mattress contains, say, 22.1 b of kapok, and if there is the fall your correspondent asserts, then it would make a difference of 22s in a double mattress, not ss; or, even if a single mattress is meant, the difference would be nearer 10s than os. But the whole tiling is absurd. Sarnarang kapok cannot be purchased in the country of origin at j anything near 7Ad per lb. It has not 1 been as low as that for many years. I The present lowest market quotation j in Auckland is Js 4d lb, and only quite recently a Christchurch firm were I offering at is Gd as a bargain. It may I be added that kapok varies consider--1 ably in quality, but no reputable firm i would make up bedding from double i dumped or inferior qualities. There is j at present a fall of about 2d to 3d per ; II) in kapok, which has been irnmej diabdy collected in the wholesale and i retail price of bedding, ns any buyer in I Ibis town can find out for themselves. ! but it is ridiculously misleading to ! speak of a reduction of is per lb, and i in justice to bedding manufacturers I and retailers alike, I should be obliged lif you would insert this correction.— I I am, etc., i GEO.
