SPEED FIENDS

DANGER TO LIFE. WHITIORA RACING .TRACK. Not once, hut many times, has the attention of the authorities been it directed, in these columns, to the speed fiends who delight in startling traffic and endangering other people’s lives, by dashing at break-neck speed along some of the principal thoroughfares of the town. Cr. W. F. Mason commented upon ttie same matter at a meeting of the Council, last night, when he said that at certain hours, particularly just after 5 p.m., it was dangerous to cross the northern part of Victoria street, towards Whitioru, owing to speed fiends. No police were ever seen down that end uf the town, and motor cyclists knowing this simply made a racing track of it. Cr. Barton said Whitiora was not the only scorcher's retreat. The Thackeray street hill was also a trying-out ground for motor cyclists, who started off at a great speed before reaching Milton street corner in a dash at the bill. If they failed to negotiate it then they tried again; if they succeeded, then the cycle was all right, and guaranteed to climb Mount Cook. (Laughter.) The road junction at the foot of Hfe hill was a very nasty one, and if these hill-climbing contests were allowed to continue, an accident would undoubtedly occur- there. It v.as overdue now, but it would come. It was decided to draw the attention of the police to speeding in the borough.
