SYDNEY'S LORD - MAYOR

DOMINATION BY LABOUR. GREAT INTEREST CREATED. (United Press Association.) Received December 9, 0.35 p.m. SYDNEY, December 9. Unwonted interest is being taken in the election of the Lord-Mayor owing io the fact that for the first time in the city's history the selection is dominated by an outside body—namely, the Australian Labour Parly. As Labour holds tile balance of power in the Council I lie Labour Parly has issued a mandate that the selection must be left in its hands. Six of the L'3 labour aldernwn objected to this interference, but strong measures were takfn to crush the revolt and after a heated meeting they, Ly seven to sjx, voted in favour o. party overlordship. An hour before the Council met to choose the Lord-Maydr the Australian Labour Parly executive met and selected Alderman Lambert as its candidate. The malcontents fell into line, and when the Council took a vole, Alderman Lambert was chosen Lord-Mayor by li to 12. Alderman Meagher supported the Labour members, otherwise it was a purely party vote.
