REPORTS OF COMMITTEES. The Legal and Finance Committee recommended as follows; —Waters' lease of 3 of 360/1, West; That an offer be made to Mr Waters to surrender the lease of the land. —Section ;;51, West: That Mrs Shaw be offered n half-acre rent free as long rs she wishes to use it, but that she have no rights of transfer, and that the Council reoccupy the balance of the land.— McKenzie’s house: That the house to he erected for the use of McKenzie be built on part of section 351, West; that the plans submitted by Grs. Snell and Scott be referred to the Mayor, with power to act, in regard to arranging for the erection of the dwelling.— Department of Labour re housing: That the Department be offered the freehold t f 10 acres from the old sanitary depot at £3OO per acre, on the conditions indicated in the Department’s letter. — Wages of employees: That consideration he deferred pending the Court’s decision in regard to the matter of 9s bonus now before the Court in Wellington.—T. J. Ladd re destructor: That Mr Ladd be relieved from his contract. That a committee report on the matter of dealing with rubbish removal, an i that Mr Ladd be given notice to vacate the portion of the old sanitary depot at present used by him. —Tate’s contract at Garden Place: That contract be terminated on the lines indicated in the supervisor’s letter of 11th November to His Worship the Mayor.—Dog registration: That the fees for the year 1921 be fixed at 10s for each dog, except vhcrc the Act limits such fee to 2s 01 Electricity generator: That the reply of the Town Clerk to a letter received Irom the Lane Proprietary be approved. The Works Committee’s report was as follows: —Re Rifle Range road: That this road will be dealt with as opportunity offers, and an effort will lie made io have it shingled this summer.— C G. Wadham re Somerset street: That the matter be left in the hands of Urn maintenance supervisor.—G. Bindon and others re Peach Grove road; That the matter be left in the hands of the maintenance supervisor to report.—Geo. Way re Grey street: That the maintenance supervisor gravel this n ad with local gravel as opportunity occurs. —Rc footpaths in Massey street: That this work be attended to in its turn. Town Clerk’s Report. The Town Clerk reported as follows: —Town Hall: On the evening of Friday, 26th November, an inside wall of the Town Hall was slightly damage i by fire, caused by the "resistance” used in Hie picture operating room causing sufficient heat to strike through a poilite sheet and ignite the wooden lining immediately underneath. Alterations have been made which will prevent ttic possibility of a recurrence of the trouble. —Firemen at entertainments: Some months ago the fire brigade was informed that tiie Council would take into consideration the question of including in the licenses granted for places of entertainment a provision that members of the fire brigade shall he in attendance at ail entertainments, such attendance to be paid for by the persons responsible for the entertainment. All licenses expire on the hist hist., so that a decision in regard to (lie 1921 licenses should now he made.— Office hours during holidays: As was done last year, I suggest that the general office be closed from Christmas Day to New Year’s Day (inclusive). Cr. Tidd said it might be. necessary, in view of the report, to “cut out” some of the items in the gasworks department, such as fittings, as the two departments were apparently being maintained at the expense of the district fund account. The speaker moved that the report be considered at a special meeting.

Cr. Lowry seconded, and the motion was carried. Town Hall and Baths. The Town Hall Committee reported as follows: —Re J. H. Hampton's application for increase of salary; Recommended that the caretaker’s salary be increased to £i pec week.—-Old Boys’ Swimming (hub, re use of baths; Recommended that permission lie granted to the club In use the. baths on one evening each week at a charge of 2d per member, the night to be arranged by the chairman.
